ZARA

The man in front of me looks like Anthony. Almost. There’s a little bit of something off.

And then he speaks.

“I’m just not as free and easy with my nipples as you are.” He uses the same dry note Anthony sometimes affects, but with less ease.

“We have the same set,” a voice calls out from deeper in the apartment. “They’re high-quality nipples.”

What have I walked into?

Maybe I should have knocked before entering the apartment above the dry cleaner. But Anthony told me to come over after work and that he’d leave the door unlocked.

Did he know what would greet me?

My guess is, I’m looking at Anthony’s twin in a mesh shirt that does in fact display his areolae. I grew up without siblings, so it’s true that I don’t have a firsthand experience on how they talk to each other. But I would’ve bet a good amount of money that nipples don’t often come into those conversations.

Guess I would have lost some cash.

“I think I should announce my presence,” I call out from the doorway so both men know I’m here. “Before this gets any more graphic.”

“Zara!” Anthony strolls out of the bedroom, proving my guess that the man in the mesh is his twin.

When the siblings stand next to each other, their differences are even more striking. At least to me.

Anthony has a slouch to his shoulders that is artistic in a way. He has a swagger to him. A looseness. He gives the sense that he could flow in and out of a situation with ease.

His twin, however, has a rigid stance. Upright, shoulders square. Not a bad thing necessarily. He seems more present. But I also have a feeling that he’s not a very good dancer.

Maybe we should invite him to the marina next Monday to test the theory.

“What’s all this talk about nipples?” I set down my bag of bagels from Mary Jo’s on the kitchen island and try not to stare at Broderick’s chest.

Anthony strolls up to me and throws an arm around my shoulders, drawing my body into his side. “This is the perfect way to introduce you to my brother, Broderick. A man as handsome as the devil while somehow having zero game.” He gestures at his now-scowling twin. “I’m trying to help him woo the mythic of his dreams. And he, for some reason, does not want to use his nipples.”

“I hate you,” Broderick mutters. Then, he clears the annoyance from his face and offers me a genuine smile. “Nice to officially meet you, Zara. I find it extremely impressive you’ve been able to put up with my brother for such a long stretch of time. You have a formidable will.”

Now, Anthony is the one glaring. “You make it sound like dating me is a chore. I’m lovely.” He turns his devastating gaze on me. “Isn’t that right?”

“Of course.” I pat his flat stomach. “You’re an adorably snarky man.” And I won’t say anything more because then I might reveal how deeply my
